Data vizualisation standards
I was lead of the design team to standardise data visualisations for ING Bank, addressing the challenge of inconsistent and outdated standards. Supervised the setup of research, workshops, designs and user testing to refine and iterate on visualisations. Successfully integrated the standardised guidelines into the global brand and ING design system. The outcome improved understanding of complex financial data and enhanced overall brand identity for internal and external users. The project demonstrated effective leadership and collaboration in achieving a cohesive and user-friendly design solution.
The previous data visualisation standards
Problem:
ING Bank identified a need to enhance the clarity and consistency of data visualisations across various platforms and communication materials. The existing visualisations where outdated lacked a unified design language, causing confusion among users and hindering effective data communication. In addition there where no good guidelines on when to use what type of data visualisation to achieve certain goals.
The key of doing data visualisation is choosing the right chart in the right context
Role & Responsibility:
As Chapter lead UX my role involved guiding a diverse team of interns and junior designers. Responsibilities included setting the project vision, coordinating tasks, providing mentorship, and ensuring the final output aligned with ING's brand identity and make sure that the right data visualisation was used for the right purpose. All in order to enhance the experience of internal and external users when consuming or creating data visualisations.
Providing context to help designers decide on data vis. type
Key Activities:
- Project Kick-off: Initiated the project by outlining the objectives, aligning team members, and establishing a timeline.
- Research and Benchmarking: Conducted a comprehensive analysis of existing data visualisations to identify best practices and improvements.
- Workshops and Training: Organised workshops to upskill team members on effective data visualisation techniques, tools, and the nuances of financial data representation.
Functionality to adjust views on data visualisations
Key Activities:
- Prototyping and Iteration: led the team in creating prototypes, gathering feedback, and iterating designs to find the balance between aesthetics and functionality.
- User Testing: Collaborated with stakeholders to conduct user testing, ensuring that the visualisations met both internal design standards and user expectations.
